Abstract
IE TCD MS 9371/923: Letter from Michael Davitt, Ballybrack, Co. Dublin, Ireland to Countess Frances Russell (Frances Anna Maria Russell, Countess Russell, née Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound), dated 21st February 1891 concerning a trip he is taking to California, via Canada: "Mrs Davitt and I are grateful for your kind letter wishing us a pleasant journey. We sail from Liverpool next Thursday to Montreal, as I am selecting to travel by the Canadian Pacific Railway to Vancouver, thence to Oakland, California where Mrs Davitt's relatives reside. This route embraces some of the grandest scenery on the American continent and as I am passionately fond of nature's great achievements, I look forward with intense pleasure to our trip. I am feeling somewhat better since I came home from London and I hope to be strong again after the voyage and the enjoyment of the scenis marvels of the famed North West. We very much regret to learn of Lady Agatha's illness. The influenza is approaching this place and we are not sorry to be on the eve of our departure. I read the account of Mr Russell's marriage in the press & it is very gratifying both to Mrs Davitt and myself to hear from you that Mrs Russell is all that a wife should be. They cannot be too happy for our good wishes. The political situation over here is more satisfactory every day as in proportion as our people are exercising their refelcting powers do they discover how great a wrong Mr Parnell has done to their country's fair fame and cause. His following is dwindling day by day, and the complete failure of the mission of mis-chief which he sent to the United States is exercising a marked effect upon the popular mind over here. Still, he is a man of varied resource and as he has no hope of ever again becoming the trusted leader of a united people he seem resolved upon effecting the ruin of a movement which he will not be permitted to control. And, of course, he will obtain the secret aid of the Tory landlord party in this unpatriotic work. Fortunately the evil enterprise will not succeed. I hope to be back again before the general election. Joined by Mrs Davitt in kindest regards to yourself and Lady Agatha..."
