El poc prolífic, sobri i gairebé desconegut historiador tortosí F. Duran, localitzà, transcriví i envià a Ch. R. Post, el professor nord-americà que començà a fer d'una forma decidida la història de la pintura medieval espanyola, el contracte d'un retaule per a l'església dels sants Joans de la població de Rossell, pertanyent a la part valenciana del bisbat de Tortosa, que s'encomanà l'any 1425 als mestres Bernat i Jaume Serra', malgrat que probablement va ser Jaume qui s'encarregà de tractar amb el mercader Esteve Ferriol, marmessor de Cinamona, esposa de Mateu Sabater, difunts. Post, en donar la notícia dins un dels apèndixs de la seua monumental obra, agraïa aquesta i altres informacions a l'erudit local. I destacava que aquest contracte era la demostració inequívoca que ambdós pintors eren germans, cosa que fins aquell moment tan sols s'havia suposat. Després, l'existència d'aquests capítols -o d'aquest retaule- l'han recollida Josep Gudiol i Santiago Alcolea en el seu corpus sobre la pintura gòtica catalana, i Sofia Mata en el capítol sobre els pintors tortosins del segon internacional de la col·lecció L'an gòtic a Catalunya}.
