Congrès Mondial Acadien 2024: Sound and Music in the Acadian Diaspora

Abstract
Southwestern Nova Scotia is home to one of the largest and oldest predominantly Acadian communities. Following the initial settlement of French Acadians in 1604, the French settler community faced mass deportation due to the intense land-ownership disputes of the Seven Years' War. The deportation, or Le Grand Dérangement, left Acadian communities shattered, with families displaced throughout North America. Many families never returned to their original settlements. As a contemporary diasporic group, Acadians hold on to their cultural and religious traditions to celebrate their heritage and resistance to assimilation through festivals, storytelling, and large gatherings. In August 2024, the Congrès Mondial Acadien cultural festival was held in Southwestern Nova Scotia, which only occurs once every five years with a new host each time. It was hosted by the Clare and Argyle regions, two significant regions for the continuation of Acadian culture and history. As a festival that changes location each time it is held, the Congrès Mondial Acadien festival is an example of the continued perseverance of the Acadian diaspora in the twenty-first century. This is especially evident during the celebration of Fête Nationale de l'Acadie, or National Acadian Day. Sonic events like the Tintamarre parade and collaborative musical performances by Acadian artists—such as P'tit Belliveau, Vishtèn, La Famille LeBlanc, Arthur Comeau, La Joie en Baie, and Kidzact, who hail from different musical communities and practice various musical styles, demonstrate the united cultural heritage of the Acadian diaspora. In this thesis, I analyze various performances from the Congrès Mondial Acadian 2024 festival and their relationship to place and Acadian identity preservation. At its core, the Congrès Mondial Acadian 2024 festival utilized a variety of artists from regions across Acadia to showcase diversity in Acadian music to a global and local audience, as shown through intentional event programming.
