Geothermal energy is emerging as a clean and renewable resource, distinguished by its superior capacity factor and baseload supply, being an alternative for district heating and greenhouses in colder climates. To expand geothermal resource base, we propose looking at a new play type associated with meteorite impact craters characterized by intense rock fracturing. We thus conducted a geothermal potential study of the Charlevoix crater in Quebec with the objective of characterizing the thermohydraulic properties of geological materials to evaluate heat transfer mechanisms and anticipate temperature at depth with numerical simulations. Thermal and hydraulic properties of rock samples collected in and around the crater were characterized with an infrared scanner and a transient gas porosimeter and permeameter for artificially fractured samples in the laboratory. Permeability was evaluated in the field by the Porchet method in 2 geothermal exploration boreholes. Numerical groundwater flow and heat transfer models were developed to estimate the steady state temperature up to 10 km depth in 2 cross sections of the crater and to analyze which parameters have the greatest impact on the subsurface temperature distribution. A total of 65 samples were analysed and the laboratory results indicated that anorthosite rocks provide insulation due to its low thermal conductivity (1.7 W m-1 K -1 ). Radiogenic elements present in the rocks were found in very low concentrations and have a low heat generation potential, less than 1 µWm-3 . Finally, permeability assessment of fractured rocks resulted in values that are high enough (about 1x10-14 m2 ) for convection to be considered as a potential heat transfer mechanism in the Charlevoix crater. The results of the numerical simulation show that deep groundwater recharge and rock thermal conductivity are the parameters with the most influence on temperature distribution. The geothermal gradient found up to 3 km depth inside the crater is about 22 °C km-1 , while outside the crater it is about 12 °C km-1 . This demonstrates the potential for direct use of geothermal resources to satisfy the heating and cooling needs of Charlevoix's main economic sectors.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
