Abstract
À travers une lecture croisée de l’épître fictive Lettre d’un singe aux êtres de son espèce, et de l’utopie La Découverte australe par un homme volant, cet article vise à mettre en évidence l’originalité de la conception de l’animalité exprimée par le polygraphe Nicolas-Edme Restif de La Bretonne (1734-1806). En effet, Restif est capable dans ces écrits, grâce à d’une représentation imaginative de l’animalité, de dépasser la simple critique de l’anthropocentrisme, pour insérer la littérature animalière au centre du processus d’'invention’ des droits de l’homme et de la femme typique du tournant des Lumières. Le pamphlet de Restif est en effet axé – d’un point de vue philosophique – sur la dimension imaginative et projective de la compassion, mobilisée par la fiction, qui permet au sujet de dépasser son tableau de vie habituel, jusqu’à sympathiser authentiquement avec toutes les formes possibles d’altérité, incarnées par l’animal non humain – le singe – et par le métis, c’est-à-dire l’homme-bête.
