La vente de produits de mode à Montréal connait des développements importants à partir de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, mais ces développements sont particulièrement marqués entre 1890 et la Première Guerre mondiale. À la même époque, les journaux quotidiens se transforment, rejoignant un public de plus en plus large, et intégrant de nouveaux éléments visuels rendus possibles grâce à la technologie. Les commerçants de mode, grands publicitaires, adoptent progressivement ces outils visuels pour faire la promotion de leurs produits et services, de façon de plus en plus sophistiquée. Ce mémoire examine les transformations de la publicité de mode dans La Presse entre 1890 et 1915, et la façon dont celles-ci reflètent l’émergence d’une industrie de production du désir chez le consommateur. Il s’agit en premier lieu d’identifier les commerçant de mode achetant de la publicité dans La Presse, les noms connus comme ceux qui le sont moins, puis de porter attention à l’évolution de leur usage des illustrations publicitaires et, finalement, d’examiner un cas de figure – le commerce Au Bon Marché, aussi connu en tant que Letendre, Fils & Cie – pour investiguer la relation spécifique d’un marchand de nouveautés francophone avec le contexte médiatique et socioéconomique de Montréal à l’aube du 20e siècle. _____________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : mode, commerce, Montréal, publicité, La Presse, publicité des journaux, presse féminine, Belle Époque, histoire des grands magasins, marchands de nouveautés, rue Sainte-Catherine
