Manuel Castells nació en Hellín (Albacete. España) en 1942. Licenciado en Derecho y Economía por la Universidad de Barcelona, cuando cursaba estos estudios, huyó a París debido a su militancia antifranquista. Doctor en Sociología por la Universidad de París, ha sido investigador en el Laboratoire de Sociologie Industrielle (Universidad de París), profesor de la Universidad de París-Nanterre, profesor y consultor de la UNESCO en la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, profesor en el Departamento de Sociología de la Universidad de Montreal, profesor visitante en el Centro de Desarrollo Urbano de la Universidad Católica de Chile y profesor en la Universidad de Wisconsin (EE UU). Durante la década de los setenta ha sido profesor y catedrático de Sociología en la École Pratique de Hautes Études (Sorbonne, París). Actualmente es catedrático de Planificación Regional de la Universidad de California (Berkeley), así como miembro del Instituto de Estudios Internacionales de esta universidad y profesor de la UOC. De su amplia producción bibliográfica destacan los tres volúmenes de La era de la información (Alianza, 1996-2000), obra enciclopédica fundamental para entender nuestro tiempo.
