Abstract
In the 2008 Ontario Birds article that announced Harry as the Distinguished Ornithologist Award-winner, I wrote at length about Harry's life, the influences that shaped his evolution as an ornithologist and his many accomplishments (Abraham 2008).As I re-read that article and other information about Harry in the preparation of this one, including documents prepared for his nomination to the Order of Canada, I marveled again at the astonishing journey of his life, the diversity of his interests and accomplishments and his legacy.Harry was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 13 March 1923.His childhood provided him with early exposure to natural history and to birds in a setting that encouraged close study of their behaviour.His father kept and reared waterfowl of many species on their home property, a small estate at Sluie on Deeside, Aberdeenshire.The displays he witnessed during spring courtship of more than 15 species of ducks inspired Harry's interest IN MEMORIAM
