Abstract
This thesis is a collection of loosely interconnected short stories that examine identity through the lens of place and family. With an emphasis on the setting of Eastern Oregon, these stories span the United States and Canada. Each character encounters the regionally specific sport of ice hockey, its quintessential frozen landscapes in stark contrast to the desert that bore most of them. The rules and culture of an unfamiliar game dredge up long-standing feelings of familial alienation and geographical dislocation. Pop culture, mental illness, and religion are also of central focus, as well as the very act of storytelling. The characters shape their narratives to suit their needs through confession, revision, and even lies. For them, reconciling oneself involves answering the seemingly innocuous question of "where are you from?" A place and its collective past--or its illusions--binds them together. They must return to the beginning if they want to find a home.
