Abstract
Des de la primera Conferència Hàbitat a Vancouver el 1976, les ciutats han emergit com els escenaris socials, econòmics, culturals i polítics de major rellevància per al progrés humà, tant des de les seves possibilitats i oportunitats com des de les seves limitacions i desafiaments. Després de l'impuls de les distintes conferències i els seus consegüents acords internacionals, han sigut nombrosos els instituts d'investigació urbana, econòmica i agències internacionals de cooperació que han promogut i portat a terme estudis sobretot allò que concerneix als assentaments humans i en particular als països en vies de desenvolupament (PVD)
