Abstract
Las principales casas nobiliarias andaluzas controlaban la mayor parte de los puertos de la región a finales del siglo xv. Su interés en los negocios marítimos ha generado una valiosa documentación que se custodia en sus archivos. Sus fondos documentales nos permiten tratar, entre otros asuntos, el fenómeno de las fronteras marítimas en el marco de las relaciones con los territorios norteafricanos. En este trabajo hemos tomando como referencia el Archivo Ducal de Medina Sidonia, cuyos legajos nos han dado a conocer las estrategias desplegadas por los Guzmán para controlar la comarca de Melilla tras su conquista en 1497
