Le présent mémoire s’intéresse à l’effet du concept de Suicide par policier interposé (SPI) sur l’analyse du recours à la force par les institutions policières. À partir d’un modèle théorique fondé dans le constructivisme ainsi que le néomatérialisme, l’auteur explore dans un premier temps les effets du concept de SPI lorsqu’il est mobilisé par les tribunaux canadiens. Il s’attarde ensuite à l’encadrement juridique du recours à la force des policiers afin de recenser les contextes où le concept de SPI pourrait être pertinent à évaluer pour analyser juridiquement une intervention policière. Face aux limites du droit dans sa dimension judiciaire, l’auteur se tourne vers les travaux du coroner afin de tenter de comprendre comment les travaux de celui-ci sont influencés par le concept. L’auteur conclut en invitant à une réévaluation du rapport social à la fonction policière et en suggérant que l’émergence du SPI est en fait le symptôme d’une difficulté sociale à reconnaitre la fonction policière pour ce qu’elle est. Chaque étape de recherche de ce mémoire s’appuie sur des méthodes élaborées afin de répondre aux questions rencontrées dans le cadre du processus de recherche.
