Abstract
This short paper summarizes content and preliminary results of an ongoing research project on the “Hybrid Governance” of Alternative Food Systems in Urban Regions. Hybrid Governance pinpoints to the tensions created by the interactivity among different governance forms (i.e. solidarity, networked-horizontal, state, market-driven) and the ways these tensions are experienced by local food initiatives, conditioning their diverse modes of out-scaling or upscaling. Three types of governance tensions are identified: organizational, resource, and institutional. The Brussels-Capital Region (BCR) is the main case study context, mirrored by a comparative analysis with the case of Toronto. Thus, the scope is to provide a fine grained socio-political analysis of the governance of local food initiatives and the challenges at stake in governing a regionally based alternative food system.
