Urban transformation, heritage processes and social sustainable futures

Abstract
In this study, we build on three case-studies to elaborate on heritage processes as futures-making practices. We draw on examples from Swedish urban transformation processes, to discuss how they contribute to social sustainability. The case-studies are the Caroli quarter in Malmö (transformed 1967–1973), the Valnötsträdet quarter in Kalmar (transformed 2008–2018), and the ongoing transformation of Kiruna town. Our results show that heritage processes involved, not always contribute to sustainable future-making practices. We conclude that careful engagement with futures in various forms is crucial for how heritage processes can contribute to long-term sustainable urban development. We suggest that this involves thinking and acting that embrace change and transformation. We conceptualise our results in a model that can be used to understand heritage processes as futures-making practices in urban transformation projects.
