Abstract

-- ABSTRACT : Coastal geomorphology of a beach can be significantly disrupted by the presence of protective infrastructure. The dismantling and removal of such infrastructure are viable solutions to enhance the dynamic nature of beaches, thus increasing the resilience of the coastal system against storms. Although several researchers propose the removal of protective infrastructure, there are few real-world examples that have been carried out and studied. This research aims to monitor the coastal system following the dismantling of a 1.7 km long rock revetment along a beach in Cap-des-Rosiers, in eastern Canada. To achieve this, three categories of analyses were conducted. First, a granulometric, hydrodynamic, and anthropogenic disturbance characterization of the study area was performed. Next, an analysis of the geomorphological response following the dismantling was carried out. Finally, indicators of natural geomorphological dynamics, such as beach width and sediment budget, were compared between the study site and a reference site to quantify the effects of hydrodynamic conditions between a natural beach and an anthropized beach. The results show that the restoration of the Cap-des-Rosiers beach allowed it to regain a natural geomorphological dynamic. The mean beach width and average sediment budget increased by 35.9 meters and 88 m³ per linear meter, respectively, reaching values comparable to those of the nearby natural beach. These changes correspond to increases of 235% and 300% relative to pre-dismantling conditions. This restoration process also promoted the formation and migration of berms typical of gravel beaches, thereby helping to reduce wave energy. In a context where examples of beach restoration through the dismantling of protective infrastructure remain rare, this study contributes to enriching the knowledge of the effects of such practices on beaches. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : beach restoration, managed coastal retreat, geomorphology, coastal science, integrated management, coastal protection.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
