Abstract
The number of people who are not in work and are not looking for work or are unavailable to start working, referred to as economically inactive people, reached its highest level in the UK at the beginning of 2024 since 2012. A high level of economic inactivity has consequences for labour supply and economic growth and has therefore become an important concern for UK labour market and monetary policies. In the West Midlands metropolitan area, economic inactivity is a particular concern due to its high level compared to other regions and metropolitan counties in England.
