Abstract
On 14 May 1980, during the Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992), the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the paramilitary ORDEN killed 600 civilians in Las Aradas, Chalatenango. The guindas had led the civilians to this historically demilitarized zone, where they sought refuge from the military’s scorched earth tactics. According to one survivor, guinda means ‘running aimlessly, walking day and night, sleeping in the bush outdoors, enduring hunger and heavy rains, running and hiding to avoid being found by the army and the paramilitaries in order to save one’s life’. Today, the communities gather annually to commemorate the victims in critical acts of collective mourning and memory. The article explores the definition of guinda through testimonies, movement, landscape, commemoration and the memorial design process in which the authors are currently involved. This research is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
