Abstract
Sia gli Stati uniti, sia l'Unione sovietica destinarono enormi risorse per costruire una rete di case editrici, associazioni culturali, testate giornalistiche, nonché per finanziare intellettuali che assolvessero al vitale compito di conquistare ampi strati di popolazioni alle loro ragioni. La conquista di una vasto consenso richiedeva di far risaltare come "superiore" non solo uno dei paesi capofila dei due blocchi, ma l'intero sistema: il modello di sviluppo, mete scientifiche, produzione di cultura in senso lato, universo valoriale sostenuto da apposite campagne che non escludevano alcuno dei settori della produziopne culturale: letteratura, cinema, musica, balletto ecc. Il modello occidentale incarnato dagli Usa o quello comunista proprio dell'Urss si sarebbe affermato vincendo sull'altro non solo sul terreno politico, ma anche su quello fondamentale della cultura.
