Il sistema glinfatico ha la funzione di drenare le sostanze di scarto presenti all'interno del cervello, tramite un flusso del liquido cerebrospinale che fa convogliare queste sostanze nel sistema linfatico. Esiste una tecnica in grado di monitorare l'attività di questo sistema, chiamata DTI-ALPS, che fornisce tre indici. Alcune ricerche mostrano una correlazione tra questi indici e altri valori ottenuti da test neuropsicologici di tipo cognitivo, chiamati: mini mental state examination (MMSE) e il montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Questa correlazione però dipende dal cosiddetto b-value, un parametro fissato durante le acquisizioni in diffusione, necessarie per ottenere gli indici ALPS. Durante questo lavoro si è tentato di verificare questa correlazione in tre popolazioni di pazienti: con sindrome di Alzheimer, con lieve deterioramento cognitivo e in pazienti sani. Questo è stato fatto tramite dei test statistici, in particolare un test di Pearson per quest'ultima correlazione. Le analisi hanno riportato che non esiste una correlazione significativa tra questi indici, ma ulteriori test hanno mostrato che gli indici ALPS hanno un forte legame con l'età dei pazienti e potrebbe rappresentare un modo per diagnosticare l'invecchiamento cerebrale.
