Cryoconite holes, small depressions that form on glacial surfaces, are considered the most biologically active environments on glaciers. I investigated the relationship between the bacterial communities of cryoconite holes and the nearby soils of Canada Glacier in the Taylor Valley, Antarctica, with the aim to understand the potential sources of inoculum. I used high throughput DNA sequencing to identify Exact Sequence Variants (ESVs) present in cryoconite holes and nearby soil samples, analyzing alpha and beta diversity to compare microbial community compositions. Significant differences in bacterial communities among habitats were observed, suggesting that cryoconite holes harbor unique microbial populations influenced by environmental factors such as water availability. Wind dispersal appears to play a crucial role in cryoconite inoculation, supported by shared ESVs between cryoconite, air, and soil samples. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of dispersal; however, this study contributes to the understanding of the complex interactions between cryoconite and soil communities.
