L’urbanisme est par nature une profession orientée vers le futur. Cependant, les urbanistes rencontrent plusieurs obstacles dans le monde de la planification d’aujourd’hui. En même temps, les zones métropolitaines nord-américaines sont confrontées à une crise persistante du logement qui nécessite des stratégies nouvelles et réfléchies pour y remédier. Outre la crise climatique et d’autres changements sociétaux, les « problèmes vicieux » actuels obligent les urbanistes à réfléchir de manière critique à leur approche du temps et de l’avenir afin de mieux répondre à ces défis. Ce projet de recherche supervisé vise à comprendre les considérations temporelles et futures que les urbanistes métropolitains prennent en compte lorsqu’ils travaillent sur le logement. Cette étude s’appuie sur une analyse documentaire à la croisée de l’urbanisme, du logement, des études prospectives et des études temporelles. Les travaux universitaires récents sur ces sujets sont utilisés pour éclairer la création d’un cadre théorique permettant d’analyser les « paysages temporels » de la planification du logement. Les plans et les politiques du Grand Boston et du Grand Montréal, ainsi que les entretiens avec des informateurs clés parmi les planificateurs métropolitains, montrent une variété de tendances et d’approches des « paysages temporels » de la planification du logement dans ces régions. Comme le révèle cette recherche, une perspective temporelle et une prospective de la planification du logement peut aider à surmonter les défis de la planification actuelle et donner aux planificateurs et aux communautés les moyens de façonner leur avenir.
