Transnational discourse of <i>Italianità</i>: Being Italian and Becoming Italian Canadian in Toronto and abroad

Abstract
This article examines the multiple transnational discourses of 'being and becoming' Italian Canadian in Toronto. It explores how transnational connections and the 'trip to Italy' bear significance on the way three Italian Canadian youth, Tania, Stefano and Salvatore, connect to the discourses of italianità (i.e., Italianness) and Canadianness inside the Italian Canadian and Italian worlds. Discourses of italianità, language and space function as a means of inclusion/exclusion that positions the 'right' Italian Canadian with the 'right' forms of capital to access symbolic and material resources (Bourdieu, 1977). This paper points to the way Italian Canadian youth negotiate, manage and resist identity positions and linguistic ideologies across multiple spaces.
