Abstract Oxidative pyrolysis of powdered waste tyre was used to recover carbon blacks with surface oxygen functional groups. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out at bench scale, over a temperature range of 385–550 °C and under various atmospheres (vacuum, nitrogen, air). The carbon blacks obtained were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Boehm analysis of oxygenated surface species, nitrogen physisorption and Raman spectroscopy. A special deconvolution of Raman spectra of the solids was proposed allowing distinct analyses of the fates of carbon black and residual rubber upon pyrolysis. High density of oxygen bearing functional groups was obtained by a proper combination of vacuum and air injection during pyrolysis. A maximum value of carboxylic acid functional groups of 1.55 mmol/g was reached.
