Abstract
The aim of this text will be to provide a synthetic definition of control and of societies of control, as theorized by Deleuze, through an analysis of the Post-Scriptum on societies of control and the Foucauldian literature on disciplinary power that precedes it (Foucault, 1975). This analysis will also mobilize William S. Burroughs’ original concept of control, the concept of psychopolitics present in the thought of Byung-Chul Han, and a reflection on the role of the moral realm in the historical constitution of control as a form of power. The first part of the text will delve into Surveiller et punir, tracing the transition from discipline to control and their complementary interweaving. The second part analyses the technical, material and moral components of control societies. In addition to an analysis of the various techniques used by the control society to format the social body, and a Marxist-leaning dissection of its structural economic origins, it will also propose an analysis of the superstructural evolution of mores as constituent to the form of power that is control.
