Abstract
Abstract The chapter explores Cather’s sense of multilayered history, linking it with the multilayered topographies of the mid-nineteenth-century American Southwest and the steep terrain of late seventeenth-century Quebec City. Her historical novels, Death Comes for the Archbishop and Shadows on the Rock, find ways to recover distant history through legend and life stories. In Archbishop, Cather practices what she calls an art of “touching and passing on.” Relationships in transit and anecdotes that come and go create the novel’s rhythm. In the contrasted portraits of her two French Catholic priests, Bishop Latour and Father Vaillant, Cather captures moods of response and religious attachment that she had first sought in her primary source for Vaillant’s life, William J. Howlett’s The Life of the Right Reverend Joseph P. Machebeuf (1908). The restrained but intimate relationship between the two priests comes gradually clearer as Archbishop Latour approaches death and recalls the fraught moment in the past when they made a commitment to missionary work together.
