Abstract
More than for any other aspect of his life, Pedro Gómez Labrador is known for being the Spanish representative at the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815), serving as a plenipotentiary minister under the newly restored King Ferdinand VII. Due to the limited successes that the diplomat was able to achieve at this international meeting, his figure has been accompanied by significant criticism, which not only questioned his diplomatic abilities but also identified him as one of the main figures responsible for Spain’s decline to the status of a second-rate international power. In that regard, this article proposes a reassessment of a largely unknown figure, by considering both his overall biography and some of his writings, situating him within a moment of exceptional importance in post-revolutionary European politics, in which Spain’s position was not without difficulties and challenges.
