A Seventeenth-Century Inventory of the Pharmacy Within the Order of St. John's Hospital in Valletta, Malta

Abstract
The Order of St. John governed the Maltese Islands between 1530 and 1798. Besides their religious and military roles they exercised charitable duties through hospitals they built and administered and a welfare network set up for the benefit of the Maltese population. The knights' responsibilities for providing services to the infirm and needy were set down in statutes, written long before they arrived in Malta, together with directives for the good governance of a healthcare system. Among the hospitals services administered by the Order was the dispensing of medicines from well-stocked and appropriately equipped hospital pharmacies. A late seventeenth-century inventory of the spezieria (pharmacy) within the Order's Sacra Infermeria (Holy Infirmary) in Valletta provides a glimpse of the services provided by the speziali (pharmacists) as financed and supervised by the knights.
