Abstract
Since its emergence in France in 2010, Street Workout (SW) has captivated youth inspired by figures such as Hannibal For King, Frank Medrano, and a new generation of athletes. Blending informal gymnastics, bodyweight training, and hip-hop culture, this discipline has evolved into both a cultural practice and a form of popular physical education. Often perceived as a male-dominated space, SW has seen the rise of female practitioners (“SW girls”). This article examines a popular SW spot in Strasbourg and shows how the participation of young women goes beyond mere promotion of the sport, contributing instead to a redefinition of gender norms and of the image of the neighborhood. It explores the impact of SW on the construction of working-class femininities and the sporting engagement of young women in working-class French neighborhoods.
