Abstract
This thesis focuses on the dynamics of the scrap metal sector in Sfax, analyzed through the lens of industrial and territorial ecology, where the interaction between artisanal and industrial practices shapes waste recovery and management. Using an approach grounded in convention theory, this study aims to analyze the relationships between the various actors involved in the sector. The thesis highlights both the industrial and artisanal branches of the scrap metal sector—the former operating within a market-based logic, and the latter within a domestic logic. Despite being marginalized by the rise of industry, artisanal production continues to exist, even as consumption practices evolve, potentially engaging this sector in a process of heritage recognition. The research shows that the scrap metal sector is characterized by an informal form of industrial symbiosis. However, this symbiosis remains fragile due to the lack of a legal and institutional framework.
