Poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis among undergraduate students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Volta Region, Ghana

Abstract
Background: Despite the high burden of toxoplasmosis globally, most countries have no control or preventive programs.Most healthcare professionals in these countries, have limited knowledge on this disease, a problem most likely originating from the inadequate education in their training on toxoplasmosis.This study aimed at evaluating the level of knowledge of toxoplasmosis among undergraduate students at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and identified knowledge gaps.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among undergraduate students of the UHAS Ghana.A structured questionnaire was used to assess knowledge on causative pathogen, mode of transmission, and others.Knowledge scores were calculated against a total score of 8. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23.Results: Of the 400 students, 332 (83%) students affirmed to have heard of toxoplasmosis, however, majority of the students had poor knowledge (n = 242, 61%).The school of medicine had the least proportion of students with poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis (n = 45, 33.5%), as well as lower odds of having poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.14-0.65;P = 0.002), with medical and physician assistantship students having the highest median scores of 4.0 (interquartile range [IQR], 2.0-6.0) and 4.0 (IQR, 3.0-5.0),respectively (P < 0.001).More female students had poor knowledge (n = 124, 71.3%; P = 0.001), and 2 times the odds of having poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis (adjusted OR, 2.19; 95% CI, 1.47-3.39;P < 0.001). Conclusion:There is a concerning poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis among undergraduate students at the UHAS.This study highlights the urgent need to enhance knowledge and awareness of toxoplasmosis within the healthcare training curriculum.
