Ce volume riche s'inscrit dans le second volet du programme de recherche La mmoire des Pres : disponibilits et usages du souvenir patristique dans l'Italie mdivale, dirig par P. Boucheron et S. Gioanni (cole franaise de Rome, LAMOP -UMR 8589, LabEx HASTEC).Il constitue la synthse ditoriale de deux journes d'tude tenues l'cole franaise de Rome en 2015 et 2016, compltes d'articles indits.Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, il fait dialoguer historiens, historiens de l'art, spcialistes de littrature et philologues pour dgager la spcificit italienne de la mmoire patristique et tenter une archologie historique de la disponibilit sociale du souvenir patristique dans l'Italie mdivale (p.10).Fait rare pour des actes, l'ouvrage prsente une relle unit, matrielle et intellectuelle.Ses trois parties, chronologiques (La rception des Pres grecs, IV e -V e sicle ; L'appropriation des Pres grecs, VI e -XII e sicle ; De l'innutrition mendiante au philhellnisme humaniste [XIII e -XV e sicles]), sont chacune prcdes d'une introduction (B.Cabouret, S. Gioanni, C. Delcorno).Une introduction et une conclusion gnrales encadrent le tout, et une bibliographie substantielle, un index et une table des figures en facilitent l'usage.L'introduction dnonce comme imaginaire le mythe fondateur d'un Moyen ge ignorant du grec (p.11) -mythe indispensable pour que la Renaissance puisse se poser comme modernit savante par opposition un Moyen ge ignorant -et montre que les catgories d'Orient et d'Occident, comme celle de Grecs et de Latins , sont non des donnes, mais des constructions, rgies notamment par des topoi (comme l'orgueil des Grecs et l'obsession agonistique de leur ascse).La densit de la disponibilit du souvenir patristique (p.12) et les enjeux politiques et thologiques propres la prsence du Saint-Sige sur son territoire caractrisent la construction de la mmoire des Pres grecs en Italie.Celle-ci repose la fois sur l'hritage de l'Italie
