Abstract

Natural hydroxyapatite was extracted from spongy and compact bovine bone tissue using the precipitation method. The obtained HA samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. It was observed that Se substituted phosphorus without disrupting the crystal structure of HA. The Se substituted samples exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus strains. However, only the Se-doped HA derived from compact bone tissue showed antifungal activity against the C. albicans strain. The cytotoxicity assay indicated that only the Se-doped HA derived from spongy bone tissue had a toxic effect on normal fibroblast cells. The results were confirmed by the cell viability assay.
