Abstract
Le cycle Soifs (1995-2018), de Marie-Claire Blais, est souvent associé à une grande charge pathétique. La narration du texte est assurée par une instance narrative discrète qui organise les focalisations internes des très nombreux personnages, ce qui plonge le lecteur dans les affects de ceux-ci. Déjà mis à l’épreuve par le rythme de lecture essoufflant dicté par la forme de l’écriture, le lecteur doit aussi composer avec l’accumulation et la succession d’expériences du pathétique construites par les événements et les personnages du texte. Cet article explore comment et pourquoi l'écriture de Soifs repose si intensivement sur le pathétique comme moteur non seulement de son action, mais aussi de son projet esthétique. Le texte interroge la nécessité pour l’art d’être porteur d’une valeur éthique : Soifs tend à privilégier une vision de l'art comme devant nécessairement conjuguer esthétique et pathétique. Le pathos devient alors associé à une valeur morale positive, sans laquelle les œuvres ne s’inscrivent pas dans la diégèse.
