Abstract
This study, dedicated to the analysis of archaeological data that provide arguments for establishing the chronology of the destruction of the Bakla settlement in the 13th century, aims to identify traces of interaction between the sedentary and nomadic populations of the Southwestern Crimea during this period. Within the framework of the research, one of the most significant events in the medieval history of the Crimea is examined – the destruction of Southwestern Taurica, including Bakla, as a result of nomadic raids in the third quarter of the 13th century. Particular attention is given to a rare find documented in the fire layer at the Bakla settlement – a whip pommel characteristic of nomadic cultures. This pommel, featuring a lateral beak-shaped projection, is classified as Type III according to A.N. Kirpichnikov's typology. The find may indicate the violent nature of Bakla’s destruction, helping to refine the historical reconstruction of events during this period. The study also addresses the issue of cultural interactions between the sedentary Byzantine population and nomadic groups, whose influence is scarcely reflected in the material culture. Based on stratigraphic analysis and the comparison of archaeological complexes, it is concluded that the fire layer of the third quarter of the 13th century belongs to the general horizon of destruction observed in the Byzantine centers of Southwestern Taurica, including Cherson and Eski-Kermen. The obtained data emphasize the need for further publication and systematization of materials from the excavations at Bakla, which will make it possible to refine the chronology of the site’s existence and to clarify its place within the historical context of the region.
