Abstract
Erle Stanley Gardner’s most famous protagonist, Perry Mason, defends the innocent and serves justice, but often uses ethically questionable means. The presentation of this contradiction in the paratext is examined, along with its elaboration in the genesis in the novels, against the background of their underlying plot and means of creating suspense. Mason’s tricks and violations against norms of authority are considered in terms of the potential to effect belief change in the absorbed and transported reader.
