Founders’ education and experience: do PhDs and prior experience lead to greater start-up success?

Abstract
This study examines how start-up founders’ education and experience – two critical components of entrepreneurs’ human capital – jointly affect firm survival. Analysing data from 10,544 South Korean start-ups between 2009 and 2014, we found that ventures led by highly educated founders (PhD holders) consistently exhibited higher survival rates. Prior leadership experience, particularly as a CEO, was associated with higher survival when combined with advanced education. Prior SME experience paired with advanced education was also associated with higher survival, though the effect was less pronounced. These findings highlight the role of founders’ educational depth and managerial experience in start-up survival, particularly in contexts where policy and institutional frameworks emphasize human capital and knowledge-based entrepreneurship.
