Abstract
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Pääesikunnan ulkomaaosaston kylmän sodan aikana laatimia arvioita ja muita tiedustelutuotteita. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on luoda kuva kylmästä sodasta Suomen sotilastiedustelun näkökulmasta. Näiden lisäksi tarkastellaan Suomen sotilastiedustelun järjestelyä ja sen kehittymistä vuosina 1945-1962. Tutkimus on toteutettu kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena. Tutkimuksen analyysimenetelmänä on käytetty aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysiä. Tutkimuksen lähdeaineisto koostuu primäärilähteistä ja sekundäärilähteistä. Tutkimuksen primäärilähteitä ovat Kansallisarkistossa säilytettävät puolustusvoimien arkistoaineistot. Sekundäärilähteet ovat yleishistorian teoksia ja sotilastiedustelua käsitteleviä tutkimuksia tai muuta kirjallisuutta. Suomen kannalta kylmän sodan aika kiteytyi väistämättä suhteissa Neuvostoliittoon. Suomella ei ollut minkäänlaista erityisasemaa Neuvostoliiton politiikassa tai strategiassa. Neuvostoliitto ei epäröinyt muuttaa aikaisempaa ystävällismielistä politiikkaansa vuonna 1958. Neuvostoliiton politiikka Suomea kohtaan ja Suomen asema sen mukana noudatteli vahvasti kylmän sodan asetelmia ja suurvaltojen valtaryhmien suhteita.Suomen puolueettomuus oli kuitenkin kytketty Neuvostoliiton suurvaltapoliittisiin tavoitteisiin ja Suomi joutui tahtomattaan sen myötä useasti tilanteisiin, jotka eivät olleet Suomen edun tai puolueettomuusaseman mukaisia
