Abstract
Merimiehet ovat olleet suomalaisen siirtolaisuuden pioneereja kaikilla mantereilla. Ensimmäiset suomalaiset ylittivät päiväntasaajan eurooppalaisten löytöretkeilijöiden mukana tai hollantilaisissa ja englantilaisissa kauppalaivoissa. 1800-luvun lopulla ja 1900-luvun alkupuoliskolla Etelä-Amerikassa liikkuneiden suomalaisten merimiesten määrä ei ole aivan vähäinen. Laivasta karanneista tai ulosmaksun ottaneista merimiehistä on tähän mennessä tiedetty kuitenkin vain vähän, sillä he eivät esiinny Suomen siirtolaistilastoissa tai muissa virallisissa lähteissä. Aina 1940-luvulle saakka merimies saattoi asettua Argentiinan maaperälle hyvinkin helposti ja kontrolli siitä, palasiko hän laivalle vai ei, oli lähes olematonta. Mies kiinnosti paikallisia viranomaisia vain, jos hän joutui jostakin syystä tekemisiin lain kanssa, tai varustamoa, jos se ei muuten saanut kokoon tarvittavaa miehistöä. Suurten kaupunkien, kuten Buenos Airesin, kujille seilori hävisi helposti myös ilman omaa tahtoaan. Marjatta Niemisen tutkimuksen kohteena ovat Buenos Airesissa käyneet tai sinne jääneet suomalaiset merimiehet. Nieminen selvittää merimiesten ja siirtolaisuuden välistä yhteyttä sekä pohtii siirtolaisuuden syitä ja seurauksia.Kirjassa on useita valokuvia ja 85 merimiehen henkilöhakemisto.
