Abstract
Anders Johan Sjögren s. 8.5.1794 Iitissä k. 18.1.1855 Pietarissa Anders Johan Sjögren oli merkittävä historian, kielitieteen ja etnografian tutkija. Hän tutki muun muassa suomen kieltä, suomen sukulaiskieliä sekä näiden kielten kansanrunoutta. Sjögrenille avautui mahdollisuus tehdä tutkimusta Pietarissa. Uuden poliittisen tilanteen vallitessa Suomen tultua osaksi Venäjän keisarikuntaa, keisarillisen kaupungin kulttuuripiireissä haluttiin nimittäin levittää tietoa suomalaisesta kirjallisuudesta ja Suomen kulttuurista. Eräs Sjögrenin teoksista on nimeltään Ueber die finnische Sprache und ihre Literatur (1821), ja se on yksi 1800-luvun ensimmäisistä Suomen kirjallisuudenhistoriaa käsittelevistä teoksista.
