Tämä opinnäytetyö käsittelee toimivia kattorakenteita ja niiden merkitystä rakennuksen kestävyyden, turvallisuuden ja energiatehokkuuden kannalta. Työ on kirjallisuuskatsaus, jonka tavoitteena on koota yhteen keskeiset periaatteet, ratkaisut ja käytännön ohjeet toimivan katon suunnitteluun, toteutukseen ja ylläpitoon. Työssä tarkastellaan ensin kattorakenteiden toiminnallisia vaatimuksia sekä yleisimpiä kattotyyppejä Suomessa. Näitä ovat muun muassa harja-, pulpetti-, auma- ja tasakatot, joiden ominaisuuksia ja soveltuvuutta eri kohteisiin vertaillaan. Seuraavaksi syvennytään vesikatteen tehtävään ja eri katemateriaaleihin, kuten peltiin, tiileen ja bitumikatteisiin. Lisäksi käydään läpi katon rakenneosat, kuten kantavat rakenteet, lämmöneristys, aluskatteet, ilman- ja höyrynsulut sekä lämmön- ja vedeneristysratkaisut. Opinnäytetyössä käsitellään myös kattorakenteiden yleisimpiä ongelmia, kuten kosteusvaurioita, puutteellista vedeneristystä, riittämätöntä tuuletusta ja rakenteellisia virheitä. Lopuksi työssä korostetaan katon kunnossapidon ja säännöllisten huolto- ja tarkastustoimenpiteiden merkitystä. Ennakoiva huolto pidentää katon käyttöikää, ehkäisee vaurioita ja tukee rakennuksen turvallista ja terveellistä käyttöä. Opinnäytetyö tarjoaa tiiviin ja käytännönläheisen tietopaketin toimivista katoista. Sitä voidaan hyödyntää sekä oppimateriaalina että käytännön työn tukena kattojen suunnittelussa, tarkastuksessa ja ylläpidossa.
