Abstract
Elias Lönnrot s. 9.4.1802 Sammatissa k. 19.3.1884 Sammatissa Elias Lönnrot on suomen kirjakielen toinen isä Mikael Agricolan rinnalla. Lönnrot loi Suomen kansalliseepoksen Kalevalan sekä Kantelettaren. Nykyisin käytössä oleva standardi-Kalevala eli Uusi Kalevala syntyi Lönnrotin muokkaamana ja toimittamana painoksena 1849, jolloin siihen lisättiin myös muiden kerääjien kokoamaa aineistoa. Kanteletar taikka Suomen Kansan Wanhoja Lauluja ja Wirsiä ilmestyi kolmena kirjana vuonna 1840. Lönnrot julkaisi myös sananlaskuja, arvoituksia ja loitsurunoja. Hän suomensi taiderunoutta Homeroksesta Runebergiin ja uudisti suomen kieltä toimittamalla useita sanakirjoja, muun muassa Suomalais-Ruotsalaisen sanakirjan.
