Abstract
This paper traces a briefly panorama of Portuguese immigration to Rio de Janeiro between ends of 19th century and the first decades of 20th century, showing the relations between the city modernization and the Lusitanian workers arrival to the city, perceiving the bota-abaixo de Pereira Passos and the hygienists actions of Oswaldo Cruz as factors that influenced decisively the sociabilities of these people, when transforming the center of the city into a stage of the tropical Belle Époque, with a profoundly Haussmann inspiration, banishing the tenement houses and its occupants for peripheral areas, such as the quarter of Cidade Nova, servant from the fens’ embankment on west of the Campo de Santana.
