Using an instructional teaching and coaching strategy based on a student/athlete environment incorporating the teaching personal and social responsibility (TPSR) model developed by Dr. Don Hellison (1995) has the potential to positively impact the personal, social, and physical development and growth of high school student athletes.The use of high school extracurricular sports (in this case, Canadian tackle football) can be used as a venue to build student leadership, service learning, positive character attributes, mentorship, individual personal growth and physical literacy.This article will examine the benefits of a mentorship model built on the foundational premise of TPSR within a high school athletic sport environment.The development and evolution of the mentorship model will be explained, and the challenges and opportunities associated with this approach will be examined.
