Abstract
Cette étude adopte une approche variationniste ajustée pour analyser les dynamiques de variation dans une variété de langue seconde postcoloniale, l’anglais namibien. Compte tenu du profil multiethnique de la Namibie, trois scénarios sont testés: (1) l’anglais de Namibie converge vers la variété de l’ancienne élite coloniale (blanche et métisse); (2) vers celle de la majorité noire ou (3) forme une variété de compromis située à l’intersection de divers ethnolectes. L’étude soutient principalement le premier scénario, bien que ce soient plus les Métis que les Blancs qui semblent servir de modèle linguistique. Les données soutiennent surtout le premier scénario, mais aussi, marginalement, les deux autres. Les résultats montrent que les variétés postcoloniales de langue seconde peuvent manifester des dynamiques de focalisation similaires à celles observées pour les langues premières, qui sont au cœur des approches variationnistes traditionnelles.
