Abstract
Project - Ref. PA08/CE/24, 22 April 2025. The project addresses the growing relevance of death and bereavement in contemporary societies, driven by population ageing and the prevalence of chronic illness. In many settings, including Portugal and Spain, death has shifted from the family and community sphere to the hospital environment. This trend—described by contemporary authors—frames death as a “forbidden” topic and a medical failure, dehumanizing the process. “Compassionate cities,” grounded in the community health model of the Ottawa Charter, propose reintegrating death and bereavement into public life, empowering communities to face the life cycle with solidarity and compassion. Community death literacy has the potential to build a culture of mutual support and preparedness for grief.
