Abstract
This paper describes a series of experimental works which were carried out on school buildings in Canada. The primary objectives of these tests were to provide full-scale test data on Canadian wood constructions with emphasis on low capacity shear walls, and study the effects of window openings and installed window frames on performance of the lateral load resisting system. The test data can also be used to validate the numerical models developed for wood frame structure subjected to large intensity earthquake loading. These experimental works consisted of two phases: 1) a series of shake table tests on a full-scale wood frame with low capacity shear walls; and 2) cyclic quasi-static tests on a series of shear wall specimens with different window configurations. The full-scale wood frame specimen tested in phase 1 was intended to represent a two-story wood frame building in Victoria, Canada constructed in 1980s. The intention of the design was to have a retrofitted structure to resist seismic hazards for the city of Victoria specified by NBCC 2015, with a focused low capacity lateral load resisting system. The shear walls tested in phase 2 included three plywood panel specimens with window opening and installed window. The tests were conducted at the Earthquake Engineering Research Facility of the University of British Columbia. The outcomes of these tests were to observe the behavior of the wood frame components and generate test data that provides good insight into the performance of existing wood frame school buildings. The test results confirmed that the specimens with installed window frames demonstrate 15% higher capacity than those specimens that only have window openings.
