Deliverable 4.14 Development of an operational POLARIS service
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The well-documented changes to Arctic sea ice results in both opportunities and challenges for global shipping. A reduction in sea ice extent has the potential for shorter shipping routes, such as the Northern Sea Route, reducing travel time and potentially fuel costs. However, the risk to shipping from unpredictable sea ice conditions, extreme weather and lack of port facilities results in ongoing safety risks, uncertainty in travel times and potential impact on the environment. Less sea ice does not guarantee safer navigation. Ships operating in ice-infested waters continue to face considerable hazards due to dynamic and unpredictable conditions. The aim of the Arctic Passion shipping pilot service (PS6) is to trial a new operational service to improve quantification of risk for vessels navigating ice-covered waters. This risk assessment, previously the responsibility of the ship’s master or ice navigator based on available ice charts and satellite imagery, uses the POLARIS methodology to retrospectively assess historical patterns of shipping risk in Arctic sea ice and investigate options for delivery of POLARIS RIO based on sea ice forecasts.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
