« La langue est indissociable des dynamiques sociales dans lesquelles elle s’inscrit. Elle ne se réduit jamais à un simple instrument de communication, mais fonctionne comme un objet symbolique chargé de valeurs, de tensions et de représentations. À chaque moment de l’histoire linguistique, les normes qui régissent l’usage sont soumises à des négociations. Ces négociations apparaissent notamment lorsque des règles en vigueur perdent de leur légitimité ou de leur adéquation à de nouvelles pratiques sociales, comme dans le cas des débats sur l’orthographe, ou lorsque des besoins émergents appellent à l’élaboration de nouveaux référents normatifs, par exemple autour du langage inclusif ou sensible au genre.
