Die aktuellen Arbeiten des DAI am Siedlungshügel Buto im nordwestlichen Delta/Ägypten befassen sich mit der Entwicklung Butos als lokales Zentrum während des Alten Reiches (ca. 2600–2200 v. d. Z.). Bei den Ausgrabungen zwischen 2021 und 2024 wurden in Buto erstmals bis zu 3,5 m mächtige Schichtungen dieser Periode freigelegt. Die verschiedenen Gebäude aus den jeweiligen Nutzungsphasen stehen im Zusammenhang mit Versorgungs- und Lagertätigkeiten innerhalb eines institutionellen Rahmens, was auch durch das epigraphische Fundmaterial bekräftigt wird.
