Deux des questions les plus fondamentales en biologie développementale chez les animaux sont celles du déterminisme sexuel (DES) et de la différenciation sexuelle (DIS). Chez les mollusques bivalves, les mécanismes régissant ces processus restent méconnus. Néanmoins, des homologues de gènes impliqués dans le DES et la DIS chez d’autres animaux ont été identifiés chez ce groupe et des études suggèrent que certaines espèces de bivalves pourraient être les premiers animaux à posséder un système de DES à la fois nucléaire et cytoplasmique. L’objectif du projet était d’établir un profil d’expression de différents gènes susceptibles d’être impliqués dans le DES et la DIS chez la moule bleue Mytilus edulis durant l’embryogenèse et la gamétogenèse. Bien que l’embryogenèse et l’expression de l’ARNm par hybridation in situ n’aient pu être étudiées, les analyses par RT-PCR ont permis de mettre en évidence l’expression sexe-spécifique des gènes Dmrt1L, Fem-1 et SoxH. Nos résultats confirment également VASA comme marqueur des lignées germinales femelles et mâles. Par ailleurs, nous avons révélé l’expression femelle spécifique de « SOXH » dans le noyau des cellules germinales précoces. Enfin, l’étude a démontré l’expression de F-ORF dans les lignées germinales des deux sexes, tandis que M-ORF s’est avérée spécifique à la lignée germinale mâle. Dans l’ensemble, ces résultats soutiennent l’hypothèse selon laquelle VASA, « SOXH » et M-ORF pourraient être impliqués dans les mécanismes de développement sexuel chez Mytilus edulis.
